Information - Velvet Drive - 71C & 72C CR2 Drop-center

The CR2 is Velvet Drive's only drop center model in its 71C and 72C Series transmissions. It has a 1.06" to 2.16" drop (depending on ratio), with no down angle, and weighs 162-175 lbs. It was discontinued but is still widely used and we stock a complete range of parts to repair them.

The CR2's come with an idler gear for opposite rotation, or no idler gear for normal rotation. Models that have many hours without service should be sent in for a rebuild, as there are some trouble spots specific to CR2 models that are easy to fix if the problem hasn't already caused damage. Two primary problems are: 1) The nut on the reversing planetary which holds the sun gear can come loose. We fix this by using a castle nut with cotter key, a thicker washer, and Loctite. 2) On idler gear models, the idler gear shaft can back out into the output shaft's ring gear. This is solved by using Loctite during the assembly and a small set screw in the adapter which houses the idler gear.
